  1. The status bar for the video is stuck on Ready.

    Most institutions have a firewall that blocks ports used by streaming windows media. Have your network administrator open port 1755 for outbound TCP traffic to 216.55.133.168. For additional information please visit Microsoft's Website.

  2. I use a Mac, can I still view the videos?

    Windows Media Player 9 is available for Mac OS X and Windows Media Player 7.1 is available for Mac OS 8.1. There is also a plugin for Quicktime that allows for playback of windows media. If after updating your Windows Media Player you are still having problems, try using the Firefox browser rather than Safari.

  3. My firewalls are off and I have the latest version of Windows Media Player and I still can't view the videos.

    To register Windows Media Player 7+ as your default player.

    Try going to Start > Run and typing in regsvr32 wmp.dll

    Do the same for regsvr32 wmpdxm.dll

    To register Windows Media Player 6.4 as your default player.

    Try going to Start > Run and typing in regsvr32 msdxm.ocx

    Do the same for regsvr32 dxmasf.dll

  4. What's the difference between and individual subscription and an institutional subscription?

    Individual subscriptions only allow one user at a time. Institutional subscriptions allow for the setup of up to 50 accounts and for the tracking of those accounts by the Institutional Account Administrator.

  5. I can't login to the library what's wrong?

    If your account was created as part of an Institution account you need to login via the unique Institutional login page which your Institution Account Manager can provide you with. If you are having problems logging into your account please wait 10 minutes and try again. Please click logout in the top right corner of the screen when you are ready to logout so if you wish to login before 10 minutes have passed you may. You may also need to delete your cookies. If you are using Internet Explorer you can do this by going to Tools > Internet Options and clicking on the Delete Cookies button. Please wait 10 minutes and then try logging in again. If after 10 minutes you still cannot login please contact our support by email or phone 1-800-633-0004.

  6. How can I make the videos larger?

    If you right click on a video while it's playing there is an option to zoom in.

  7. Do I need broadband? Can I use a dial-up modem?

    A The videos are streamed at 530 kilobits per second. You need a broadband connection such as a Cable Modem, DSL or other high speed connection to view the videos smoothly. If you are on a network with high speed internet access make sure you are permitted to view streaming videos.

  8. How do I play the video full screen?

    Using your mouse, right click on a video as it plays, and select Zoom-Full Screen from the menu. You can exit full screen mode by right clicking again.

  9. Can I download the videos to burn to a CD?

    No, these videos are streaming only. You cannot save the videos to your computer.

  10. The videos do not play right away. Isn't this supposed to be real time?

    Streaming videos need to buffer a small portion of the video before playing in order to prevent lag. On broadband internet connections this should only take a few seconds.

  11. My computer tells me I need to download a codec to play the videos. What does this mean?

    Your Windows Media Player may be too old and out of date to play the videos. The latest Windows Media Player can be downloaded from Microsoft's website.

  12. I hear audio but see no video.

    Sometimes other media applications like Real Player take over Windows Media Player's settings for playing different types of media. You can force Windows Media Player to play the videos by opening Windows Media Player and then Going to Tools > Options (If you have Windows Media Player 11 you may need to right click on the icon in the top left of the Windows Media Player screen to access this menu) and clicking on the File Types tab. Then check the Windows Media Video File (.wmv) option and hit OK. Close all your browser windows and then try logging in again.

    If that didn't work or isn't the issue. Try downloading this codec: Windows Media Video 9 VCM. The Video Compression Manager (VCM) version of the Windows Media Video 9 codec enables earlier versions of encoding and editing applications to support the Windows Media Video 9 codec in file containers such as Audio Video Interleaved (AVI). This codec package also allows Windows Media Video (WMV) files based on Windows Media Format 9 Series to be played in Windows Media Player 6.4.

  13. I see video but hear no audio.

    Make sure the volume on Windows Media Player is on full and not muted. Also check that the volume in your operating system is on full and not muted (usually a speaker icon in the taskbar but can also be accessed via the Control Panel > Sounds). Finally, check that your speakers are on and able to play sounds other than those from our videos.

  14. In Firefox with Windows Media Player 11, the Windows Media Player control stretches incorrectly.
